The name Hanan, as referenced by Roy Hanan in his book "A Dentist at Large", is found in the book of "Book of Nehemiah"
Both Jewish and Christian history agree the Book of Nehemiah was written by the man Nehemiah. Very little is know of Nehemiah's early life but the book, written in a first person narrative style, tells the story of Nehemiah who at the time the book begins is servant to King Artaxerxes and serving in the royal Persian court in the city of Susa around 444 BCE.
In the city of Susa the Jews are living in exile in what was known as Babylon, having been taken by force from Jerusalem some 70 years earlier. The familiar words of Psalm 137 , “By the waters of Babylon, there we sat down and wept when we remembered Zion,” are often cited as expressing the mood of the Babylonian exiles.Nehemiah is given permission to return the Jewish families home. He calls them to a meeting and it is here the name of Hanan appears.

In the book of Nehemiah, the families held in exile in Babylon and who will return with Nehemiah to Jerusalem to help rebuild the city walls are named. Ezra reads to the exiles, "These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken captive they are to be returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town".
Hanan is named as part of the Temple servants contingent ..."Lebana, Hagaba, Shalmai, Hanan, Giddel, Gahar" (Nehemiah 7).
Hanan is also mentioned at this time as being One of the chief people of the tribe of Benjamin. (1 Chronicles 8:23)
The sons of Hanan were among the Nethinim who returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel. (Ezra 2:46; Nehemiah 7:49) (B.C. 536).
Hanan is one of the Levites who assisted Ezra in his public exposition of the law. (Nehemiah 8:7) (B.C. 446.) The same person is probably mentioned in (Nehemiah 10:10)
Hanan is one of the "heads" of "the people," who also sealed the covenant. (Nehemiah 10:22) (B.C. 410.)
Another of the chief laymen on the same occasion. (Nehemiah 10:26)
And I made treasurers over the store houses, Shelemiah, the priest, and Zadok, the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah; and next to them was Hanan, the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren. (Nehemiah 13:13)
