Dentist at Large vs Migration at Large
Migration Information
"Migration at Large" uses the family migration information from chapter one of Roy Hanan's autobiography "A Dentist at Large" written in 1977, to tell Roy Hanan's family migration story.
Roy's Theory
Roy Hanan writes that the journey of the Hanan family possibly begins around 600 BCE in Babylon, deducing this theory from the references to the name Hanan in the old testament. Centuries later, he muses that the Jewish families of Hanan wondered across Europe to France where they converted from Judaism and became Protestant. The Hanan family in 17th century, are then forced to flee with other Huguenots to avoid religious persecution. They escape first to Essex and later to Ireland.
In the 19th century looking for a better life the Irish Hanans were on the move again. James Albert Hanan, Roy Hanan's grandfather, and James's brother Robert Hanan immigrate first to Australia and then finally to New Zealand.
It probably doesn't matter whether you believe Roy Hanan's fantastic migration journey of the family Hanan. This amazing story with beginnings in ancient Babylonian temples, in slavery, fleeing Huguenots, famines, and wars. A story involving biblical characters, coach builders, scientists, sailors, and politicians. Regardless of facts you can see that Roy Hanan has a story to tell and in his own words "...it could be our origin was Jewish an eventually, through the Huguenots, become Irish. Anyway, that is the story I am sticking to...." (A Dentist at Large).
What is clear, while there may be little in the way of concrete facts on the Hanan's in Babylon and France there is a lot of information from the Irish, Australian and New Zealand part of the journey: through records of birth, death and marriage, newspaper articles and advertisements, shipping information and a large collection of Hanan family personal history passed down and kept and correlated by Dame Elizabeth Hanan, in her book "The Hanan Journey".

A Dentist at Large
Roy Hanan had lead a very interesting life, he had traveled extensively, had a rewarding and varied career firstly as a dentist and then later in public relations. When you're finally retired and have done all the things you want to in your life, he asked himself, why not write a book?.
In 1975 Roy Hanan wrote "A Dentist at Large". The book was written by Hanan to record various personal incidents and events he had experienced over his life. Despite contacting several publishers, no one expressed any interest in publishing the book. This was of little consequence to Roy Hanan, a man of independent means, he published it himself under G.R. Hanan Publishing.
The book tells the story of the first arrival of the Hanan family to New Zealand, the Hanans close association with Invercargill and the contributions by the Hanan family to the history of New Zealand.
